La cirugía académica y la felicidad

Introducción. La presente reflexión explora la complejidad de la felicidad en cirugía, más allá de la satisfacción y el compromiso laborales. Propone que, particularmente en la cirugía académica, la felicidad implica propósito, autorrealización y trascendencia. Frente a una tasa global de desgaste profesional del 47 %, cuestiona si el entorno académico ofrece protección o simplemente otras recompensas y tensiones.
Métodos. Se estructura el análisis en tres fases: (1) revisión conceptual sobre bienestar, distinguiendo entre satisfacción/compromiso y dimensiones hedónica y eudaimónica; (2) exposición de tres hipótesis sobre el origen de la felicidad en la profesión quirúrgica; (3) análisis empírico de la asociación entre práctica académica y niveles de bienestar, basado en estudios recientes.
Resultados. La satisfacción laboral y el compromiso no garantizan bienestar pleno. Se identifican tres fuentes potenciales de felicidad en cirugía: vocación, desafíos y academia. Aunque la cirugía presenta altas tasas de desgaste y estrés, algunos estudios sugieren menor desgaste, mayor satisfacción y motivación intrínseca en cirujanos académicos (bienestar pese a ingresos económicos menores).
Conclusión. La cirugía académica no es un refugio frente al desgaste, pero ofrece condiciones propicias para una forma de felicidad fundamentada en crecimiento personal, conexión con otros y trascendencia profesional. Se enfatiza la necesidad de investigar esta relación en contextos locales y su impacto en desenlaces clínicos y académicos.
